India-Pak fans wreck havoc down under

Date:

Sydney: A club in New South Wales (NSW), Australia saw up to 40 people getting involved in a wild brawl on Sunday as they watched arch-rivals India and Pakistan go head-to-head in their World Cup opener in Adelaide on the big screen.

Almost 40 brawlers tore apart the Merrylands RSL Club. The club’s CEO Bryn Miller said that every fist and chair thrown during the wild brawl was captured on CCTV inside the club, which prides itself on its multicultural harmony.

Police have urged the 40 brawlers that tore the venue apart to turn themselves in before they are caught.

As 50,000 fans celebrated the closing stages of India’s crushing victory over their arch rivals at Adelaide Oval, up to 40 people clashed inside Merrylands RSL Club as they watched the action unfold on the big screen.

The melee saw four people taken to hospital with a range of injuries.

Miller claimed the tensions rose as the evident winner was going to surface, adding that 20 minutes beforehand there was some pushing and shoving by overexcited fans and it was calmed down.

Miller claimed that Pakistan hit a six and the crowd went very vocal and cheered and a person raised a chair and threw it at someone.

Security footage from one of the club’s 200 cameras captured the offender walking a great distance with the chair before throwing it at an opposition fan. The blow was softened by the chair’s upholstery.

The man and his friend, neither in an identifiable team jersey, ran from the club.

Miller claimed that then other people were punching and throwing other furniture, adding that it lasted about a minute but in a minute it was an unbelievably ugly scene.

Miller insisted when the police came it put oil on troubled waters.

Police are examining CCTV footage and expect to be able to identify everyone involved in the incident promptly, the report added.
