Ravindra Jadeja Fined For Applying ‘Ointment’ Without Umpires’ Permission

Date:

Nagpur: The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Saturday initiated action against Indian spinner Ravindra Jadeja in the ongoing Border Gavaskar Trophy Test series with a fine of 25 percent of his match fee for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct.

Ravindra Jadeja was fined for an incident that occurred during the 46th over of Australia’s first innings on Thursday, 9 February, when he was seen applying a soothing cream to his index finger.

While the Indian team management clarified that the cream was an ointment that was applied by the finger spinner due to swelling on the index finger of his bowling hand.

ICC in a statement added that the player did not take permission from the on-field umpire and hence will be fined under the article “displaying conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game.”

The statement further added that “the Match Referee was satisfied that the cream was applied to the finger purely for medical purposes. The cream was not applied as an artificial substance to the ball and consequently, it did not change the condition of the ball”.

India won the opening test match taking a 1-0 lead in the series against Australia after a win by an innings and 132 runs.

According to reports, Jadeja admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Andy Pycroft, match referee, so there was no need for a formal hearing.

Ravindra Jadeja has an exceptional comeback in the opening test with a five-wicket haul in the first innings followed by an invaluable batting performance of 70 runs in the innings.
