Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has responded to the Democratic Party’s sweeping gains in the 2026 US midterm elections with sarcastic remarks on X, after several Republican candidates backed by him suffered defeats.
Musk posted two messages on the social media platform, writing, “Data centers in space looking pretty appealing right now,” before adding, “Guess my election-interfering space lasers didn’t work this time.”
The comments came after Democrats secured control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, marking a major shift in the balance of power in Washington and a setback for President Donald Trump’s Republican Party.
Musk had emerged as one of the biggest financial backers of Republican candidates during the election cycle. According to Axios, he spent an estimated $445 million supporting Republican campaigns, making him one of the largest individual political donors in modern US history.
One of his major political investments was in Texas, where Republican candidate Ken Paxton lost the Senate race to Democrat James Talarico. Talarico’s victory marked a significant Democratic breakthrough in a state that has long favoured Republicans.
During his victory speech, Talarico invoked the biblical story of David and Goliath, referring to powerful figures including Musk and Trump as forces his campaign had challenged.
Musk’s remark about space-based data centres also drew attention amid growing debate over the technology industry’s energy requirements and the future of artificial intelligence infrastructure. His comments followed the victory of Democrat Gina Hinojosa in the Texas governor’s race, where data centre expansion had emerged as a campaign issue.
