Indian-American Democrat Aruna Miller has secured a second term as Maryland’s lieutenant governor alongside Governor Wes Moore after their Democratic ticket defeated the Republican team of former state delegate Dan Cox and running mate Rob Krop in the November 3 US midterm elections.
According to the Maryland State Board of Elections, the Moore-Miller ticket received 761,368 votes (62.62 per cent), while the Cox-Krop ticket secured 406,637 votes.
Thanking voters for renewing their confidence, Miller said she looked forward to continuing her work for Maryland residents alongside Moore.
“Governor Moore and I are incredibly grateful to Marylanders for trusting us once again,” she said, also acknowledging campaign volunteers, teams and their families.
Born in Hyderabad, India, Miller moved to the United States with her family at the age of seven. She studied civil engineering at the Missouri University of Science and Technology, graduating in 1989, before entering politics. She represented Maryland’s District 15 in the House of Delegates from 2010 to 2018.
Miller joined Moore’s Democratic ticket in 2022 and became Maryland’s 10th lieutenant governor in January 2023.
She was the first woman of colour and the first immigrant elected to statewide office in Maryland.
During her tenure, she has focused on infrastructure and transportation projects, economic growth and opportunities for working families. At her swearing-in ceremony, she placed her hand on the Bhagavad Gita.
