Four days to go for the Chetak Festival Sarangkheda

Every December, the Chetak Festival Sarangkheda is celebrated in Maharashtra organised by Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation, in the Northern part of Maharashtra.

The Chetak Festival is an age-old rural fair of horses that takes place for a month. For this year, the dates are December 12 to January 8 next year, in the Nandurbar district held on the banks of River Tapi. It is a 300-year old legacy and exhibits the vibrant heritage of the state.

When tradition blends with trade and royalty blends with heritage, this old horse fair is the largest celebration of horses. The beginning of the festival the Datta Jayanti Festival which marks the celebrations of the Datta Temple in the village.

According to a legend, Chhatrapati Shivaji, the brave Maratha ruler used to visit the fair to by the best quality of horses for the war. It is basically a festival of horse trading from India to other countries and more than 2000 to 2500 horses can be seen taking part in it.
