Incoming House Oversight Committee Chairman Robert Garcia has issued a blunt warning to the Trump administration following the Democratic Party’s victory in the US House of Representatives, posting a two-word message: “Lawyer up.”
Garcia, the current ranking member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, released the statement after Democrats secured a majority in the House in the 2026 midterm elections. He is set to take over as chairman when the new Congress convenes in January 2027.
In a statement published on the House Oversight Democrats’ official website, Garcia said he would focus on investigating what the party has described as corruption involving the Trump family, corporate misconduct, alleged abuses by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and the handling of files related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
The warning comes as Democrats prepare to use their newly secured congressional majority to intensify scrutiny of President Donald Trump’s administration. As committee chairman, Garcia will have greater authority to initiate investigations, hold hearings and issue subpoenas seeking documents and testimony.
Garcia has previously outlined plans to examine the Trump family’s business dealings, cryptocurrency ventures, alleged conflicts of interest and government contracts. He has also called for public hearings into the Epstein case, including questions surrounding the Justice Department’s handling and release of related records.
Democrats’ victory in the House gives the party control of congressional committees and the ability to investigate the administration during the final two years of Trump’s presidential term. The party has also signalled that affordability, healthcare and the impact of the administration’s policies will feature prominently in its legislative agenda.
