New Delhi: With his ‘climate fast’ entering its fourth day at Khardungla pass (18,000 ft) at -40 °C, Sonam Wangchuk — the renowned engineer, educationist and reformer from Ladakh took to Twitter, urging the people of India to join him on the last day of his fast in support of Ladakh.
“GOOD MORNING WORLD! 4th day of my #ClimateFast to #SaveLadakh under #6thSchedule of Indian constitution. You all can join me tomorrow 30th Jan, last day of my fast. You can organise a 1 day fast in your area in solidarity with #Ladakh & ur own surroundings #climate #ILiveSimply,” he wrote.

In a tweet on Saturday, Wangchuk shared a copy of a bond, which among other things, sought an undertaking that he would not make any comments, statements, public speech, hold or participate in public assemblies or any activity related to the recent events in Leh district.
“CALLING LAWYERS OF THE WORLD!!! The #Ladakh UT administration wants me to sign this bond even when only fasts & prayers r happening(.) Pls advise How right is it, should I silence myself! I don’t mind arrest at all #ClimateFast #6thSchedule #LiFE #saveladakh @AmitShah @narendramodi,” he wrote.

Last Sunday, Wangchuk — while addressing Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a YouTube video — had said, “All is not well in Ladakh.”
The eco-fragile area needs to have greater autonomy, he said, under the 6th Schedule of the Constitution. This has been a persistent demand of the local population ever since Ladakh was carved out as a separate union territory after Article 370 was scrapped in 2019.
Born in Uleytokpo near Alchi of Leh district, 56-year-old Wangchuk won the Ramon Magsasay award for his community-driven reform of learning systems in remote northern India, thus improving the life opportunities of Ladakhi youth.
