Delhi surgeon in a soup after operating leg of head injury patient

A case of sheer negligence by a senior doctor in Delhi landed him up in a thick soup after he performed a leg operation on a patient with a head injury. The incident took place in Sushruta Trauma Centre, a government hospital in Civil Lines, Delhi where a senior surgeon got confused with another patient who had a leg injury and operated upon Vijendra Tyagi instead.

The patient had been admitted to this hospital with minor injuries on his face and due to an accident. However, the doctor confused Vijendra Tyagi with another patient names Virendra who had been admitted to the same ward for a fracture in his leg.

Tyagi was given anaesthesia prior to the surgery, due to which he could not understand what was happening to him and failed to raise an alarm. It was 9.30 am on April 19 when this incident took place and once the fault was recognized, the corrective measure was immediately taken by the hospital staff. Since this mistake was unpardonable, the doctor has been barred from performing any more surgeries without supervision.

Ankit Tyagi, the patient’s son says that the issue for which he was admitted has not been resolved which a headache, moreover, he is now even unable to walk properly. However, he and his family has decided to forgive the doctor without taking any legal measure against him.
