Lanka defends its human rights record

Date:

Colombo: Sri Lanka has rejected the US criticism of its human rights record. Its External Affairs Ministry said claims of religious intolerance were reckless and irresponsible, “The (U.S.) claims are unsubstantiated and attributing blame to the government is totally unwarranted.”

The statement comes days after UN’s call for punishing military personnel responsible for atrocities in the civil war, which lasted nearly 30 years till 2009. The US announced on Sunday that it would table a third UN human rights resolution against Sri Lanka, in March, to address the war crimes allegation.

A top Sri Lankan official said in Washington last week that an international inquiry into war crimes would bring “chaos” and insisted that the government’s national reconciliation process must be given several more years to work.
