Injury ends Weirathers Alpine World Cup hopes

Date:

Tina Weirather has called a halt to her season to give her more time to recover from an injury to her right leg she picked up in a training crash at the Sochi Olympics.

The 24-year-old skier from Liechtenstein told the Liechtensteiner Volksblatt newspaper she would need a further eight weeks of rest to properly heal the damage done to her right tibia in the fall while training for the Olympic downhill race on February 9.

That rules her out of the remaining races in the alpine skiing World Cup and wrecks her chances of winning the overall title.

Weirather currently stands second in the overall World Cup standings just 139 points behind leader Maria Hofl-Riesch of Germany with nine races to come.

She also had a chance of winning the World Cup for super-G as she is in second place, just 38 points behind Lara Gut of Switzerland with one race to come.

Weirather was unable to take part in any of the races at the Olympics where she had been one of the favourites to win medals.
