Vote for consolidation marks biggest election phase

Date:

New Delhi: High turnout was witnessed in 121 constituencies which went to polls across 12 states in the fifth phase of Lok Sabha elections on Wednesday. The political fate of heavy weights like Nandan Nilekani, Maneka Gandhi, M Veerappa Moily and Jaswant Singh is at stake.

Analysts say this may have happened because of consolidation of pro-Modi and anti-Modi votes. In many constituencies in Maharashtra the Muslim votes may go to Congress while in some constituencies in UP a division may help BJP.

While West Bengal topped the percentage turnout chart with 79%, Manipur grabbed the second spot with 74%. Rajasthan (63%), J&K (69%), Maharashtra (55%), Chhattisgarh (62%), Madhya Pradesh (54%), Odisha (10%), Karnataka (68%), Bihar (54%) and Jharkhand (62%) also witnessed the record turnout in the most important phase of the election.

There were a few incidents of violence, including blasts, in Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and Uttar Pradesh in which four people, including three security personnel, were injured.
