Errant drivers under eagle eye of Mumbai police

Date:

Mumbai: The traffic police have launched a special campaign to crackdown on unruly motorists and bikers after zeroing in on timings when they are most likely to flout driving rules. During the last two days, more than 5,400 offenders have been booked by traffic divisions across Mumbai. Under the drive titled “Operation Eagle”, a special team has been formed to focus on Marine Drive.

The squad will work towards ensuring “zero traffic violations” between Girgaum Chowpatty and Nariman Point. “We noticed that jumping signals peak between 8am and 8.30am just before rush hour starts and later in the day between 9.30pm and 10pm. It is usually the time when traffic policemen are yet to arrive for duty or have completed their shift,” said joint commissioner (traffic) B K Upadhyaya.

“As part of Operation Eagle, some plain-clothes officials are posted at junctions. The moment they spot a motorist jumping a red light, they report its registration number to a colleague posted 200m ahead. Nearly 1,656 offenders were booked for the offence since the beginning of the drive on May 28,” he added.
