Powell returns to Wales with Dragons

Date:

Former British and Irish Lion Andy Powell is to return to his native Wales after joining Newport Gwent Dragons in time for the start of next season, the Celtic League club announced Wednesday.

Back-row forward Powell has been without a club since being released by rugby league giants Wigan in January following a short stint with the Warriors.

But the powerful 32-year-old is now set to return to the 15-man code where he has won 23 caps for Wales and played for the likes of Cardiff Blues, Wasps and Sale.

He is also going back to where he started, having launched his senior career with Newport RFC.

“I am extremely delighted to be back in Wales. I have very fond memories of playing for Newport RFC and can remember the great support we had from fans when I previously played for them,” Powell told the club’s official website as he looked forward to working under coaches Lyn Jones and Kingsley Jones.

“I have been very impressed through the season with both Kingsley and Lyn’s ambitions for the region,” Powell added.

“I am very excited for the challenges that lie ahead and look forward to challenging the other Welsh regions for silverware.”

Kingsley Jones said: “I am very excited that we are bringing Andy back to Gwent to play.

“He has the X-Factor and brings a lot to the team dynamics not forgetting his great ball carrying skills.

“He will be coming back here to challenge the likes of Taulupe Faletau for a first team spot as well as adding experience to the squad.”
