Spurs big man Diaw finally getting his due

Date:

Tony Parker says he is pleased to see French compatriot Boris Diaw finally getting the recognition he deserves.

“I am so happy for him, to see him blossom on the big stage and everybody can see now what he is capable of,” said Parker of his San Antonio Spurs and France international teammate.

Parker and the 2.03 metre (6-foot-8) Diaw led France to a FIBA EuroBasket championship in 2013, and now Diaw is seeking to join Parker as an NBA champion. Parker has won three NBA titles with the Spurs while Diaw is seeking a first.

The Spurs were leading the two-time defending NBA champion Miami Heat two games to one heading into game four Thursday night in downtown Miami.

Centre Diaw made his first start of the 2014 playoffs in a 111-92 Spurs blowout of the Heat in game three on Tuesday. In 37 minutes of playing time, Diaw scored nine points on three-of-six shooting from the field and had five rebounds.

Diaw made 24 starts during the regular season for San Antonio, more often coming off the bench.

“He had a big summer with us last summer with the national team,” Parker said. “He played great basketball and we finally won our first gold medal.

“It is just like a dream to be able to win the gold medal with the national team and then this year have another opportunity to win a championship.”

Diaw played for Pau Orthez of the French league before joining the NBA.
