New Delhi: Five teenagers chased a 20-year-old youth in South-East Delhi and stabbed him to death before dozens of horrified onlookers even as a CCTV camera captured the murder in gruesome detail.
Delhiites watched the two-minute sequence in horror as the clip, captured on a camera installed in a shop, was aired on news channels. The victim, Sachin, allegedly worked for some local criminals-one of them identified as Deva-who are in jail and was running an extortion racket in the area on their behalf. Sources said he was also involved in a murder attempt in Sangam Vihar.
The footage shows Sachin riding a bike with pillion rider through a busy lane in Madangir and a group of boys approaching from the opposite direction. As the group intercepts Sachin, the pillion rider is seen jumping off and running away.
The group surrounds the victim, kicks him off his bike and begins to stab him. As Sachin tries to escape, they chase him for around 10 metres and pin him down. He is then taken to another corner where he is stabbed multiple times on the back, abdomen and chest. The group then walks off as stunned passersby watch on.
None of the witnesses makes any attempt to intervene. Even after the incident, people can be seen walking away even as the victim lies on the road bleeding. Police said the attack took place at 3.05 pm. All the accused have been apprehended. Three of them were confirmed to be juveniles while the other two also claimed to be juveniles, which police officers were in the process of verifying.
In their statement, the accused said Sachin used to extort money from them and even forced one of them to have unnatural sex with him frequently. The accused have been sent to a reformation home after being produced before the juvenile justice board, police said.
“The accused and other locals have stated that Sachin used to collected weekly ‘protection money’ from the suspects who own small kiosks and businesses in the area. He had assaulted them on several occasions for not paying up on time. On being denied payment, he also sodomized the juveniles,” an officer said.
Exasperated with his demands and ill treatment, the teenagers said they decided to eliminate him.
The police said they reached the spot rushed after receiving a call and took Sachin to hospital, where he died during treatment due to excessive blood loss. A case of murder was registered and the police conducted massive raids in the area during which they apprehended the accused one by one.
They were questioned on Wednesday afternoon during which they confessed to the crime and narrated Sachin’s atrocities, police said.
Angry family members and friends of Sachin blocked the BRT on Wednesday noon causing huge traffic jams for more than an hour. They were later dispersed after police officers negotiated with them and promised speedy action in the case.
