English Vinglish mints $1mn in Japan box office

New Delhi: Not many Hindi films find a release in Japan but with ‘English Vinglish’ storming theatres there, it’s again a proud moment for Bollywood.

Eros International’s English Vinglish, which released in across 33 screens in Japan on June 28, this year, continues to perform very well at the box office with a whopping $1 million and still counting. With this announcement, the film inches closer to Aamir Khan’s ‘3 Idiots’ that minted $1.6 million.

With an overwhelming response from the audiences and theatres packed to capacity, the film released in another 17 odd screens additionally, taking the total screen count to 50 in across 20 cities in Japan.

Sridevi is elated with the dream run of the film and said, “I am flattered with all the love and affection the film continues to receive and once again I thank the director Gauri Shinde for making such a wonderful film”.

The film revolves around the life of an ordinary Indian housewife and her battle with the English language. The grand premiere of the film held in Tokyo on May 27 this year was a huge success and was attended by its leading lady Sridevi along with First lady of Japan, Akie Abe and famous Japanese singer, Agnes Chan.
