18-year-old Indian to go to Antartica

New Delhi: Zareen Cheema, an 18-year-old from Pune, was granted a visa by the Argentinan consulate general after being selected amongst the top 65 students worldwide becoming the only Indian student to go on an expedition to Antartica as a part of the ‘Students on Ice’ expedition 2014. 

This expedition, which will be carried on from the sea, will bring together high school and university students globally with 23 scientists, educators, artists, musicians, CEO’s, polar experts and innovators. 

The purpose of this expedition is to educate students about the effects of climate change and the students are on their way back to their home countries.

Zareen is also the youngest candidate among 705 on running to land a spot on the one-way manned mission to Mars where the first human colony will be set up. 

She is currently studying mechanical engineering and has won many prizes from NASA.
