Moscow: According to reports, Russian Defence Ministry is planning on boosting its military capabilities in Crimea, the Kaliningrad region, and the Arctic.
They will also be carrying out other planned modernisations of the armed forces and drafting a new long-term defence plan.
This comes as Russia remains in threat with western sanctions against it for its growing clout in the Ukraine and NATO’s military build-up to keep it in check.
Russia had called NATO’s military near its border as the main military threat and raised the possibility of using precision conventional weapons as a “strategic deterrent,†in December last year.
“We are drawing up a new Russian Federation Defence Plan for 2016-2020 to ensure timely placing and obligatory fulfilment of state defence orders in 2015 to have modern models of weapons and military equipment as planned,†Defence Minister Sergey Shoigu said.
Moscow is refocusing its major rearmament plan, worth over 20 trillion roubles ($310 billion) over the span of 10 years, according to the new military doctrine.
“In 2015, the Defence Ministry’s main efforts will focus on an increase of combat capabilities of the armed forces and increasing the military staff in accordance with military construction plans,†Russia’s chief of General Staff, Valery Gerasimov, was quoted as saying on Tuesday.
