New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India has asked the Centre to file a composite response on the number of licensed abattoirs in the country and the progress it is making towards ensuring their modernization as well as taking steps to end cruelty towards animals brought in for slaughter.
A two-judge bench of the apex court, comprising of Justices Madan B Lokur and Uday Umesh Lalit appointed the Ministry of Urban Development as the nodal body to coordinate with different government ministries that are dealing with different aspects of slaughter houses.
The apex court expressed its distress over the current prevailing situation with regard to slaughter houses, and pulled up the Urban Development Ministry for washing its hands off the issue and placing the onus of responsibility on other ministries.
