Rakesh Maria, ex-Maharashtra’s Anti-Terrorist Squad chief and senior IPS officer, who had vowed to take the high profile case to its logical conclusion, was replaced by Ahmed Javed as new Mumbai CP.
Mumbai: In a surprise move, top Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria, who was heading the Sheena Bora Murder probe, was on Tuesday promoted and posted as DG Homeguard.
Ahmed Javed, who will retire after four months, will take his place as the new Mumbai Police Commissioner. The order has been officially issued to Maria. He will hand over the charge on Tuesday itself and Javed will be taking over with immediate effect.
It is believed that the powerful lobby of Peter and Indrani Mukerjea is behind Maria’s transfer. However, Maharashtra Home Secretary K P Bakshi claimed that the government wanted to issue the orders before the beginning of the festival season. Following Maria’s promotion, he will no longer be involved in the case.
It is also being said that this has nothing to do with his involvement in investigation of any particular case.
Maria, ex-Maharashtra’s Anti-Terrorist Squad chief and senior IPS officer, had vowed to take the high profile case to its logical conclusion and not to allow another Aarushi murder case. The former top cop was personally monitoring the investigation into the mysterious murder of Sheena Bora in which TV Tycoon Indrani Mukerjee is a prime accused.
Rakesh Maria was eligible for the post of DGP in 2011 itself. He will retire in December 2016.
