Starace, Bracciali life bans overturned

Date:

Italian tennis players Potito Starace and Daniele Bracciali saw life bans from the sport overturned on Saturday by an Italian Tennis Federation (FIT) court of appeal.

Starace and Bracciali were banned for life on August 6 this year after being accused of fixing matches as part of an intricate illegal betting scam.

Starace was cleared of all wrongdoing by the FIT, while Bracciali saw his ban reduced to 12 months and was told to pay half of an initial fine of 40,000 euros.

A statement by the Italian tennis federation (FIT) said: “The FIT court of appeal has absolved Potito Starace… and reduced the life ban handed to Daniele Bracciali to a ban of 12 months.

“The decision was reached following an appeal lodged against the sentence, with which an FIT tribunal found both players guilty of altering the results of certain matches in order to gain financially from illicit sports betting.”
