Sednaya prison of Bashar al-Assad is a place, where prisoners take an appointment with death. Where, torture, rape, loneliness and all sort of inhumane treatments are daily practice and everyday prisoners die from starvation.
Sednaya Prison is a military prison situated near Damascus in Syria. This prison has been used to detain political prisoners, who are either rebels or member of Muslim Brotherhood or other Islamist groups. An anonymous source within the prison, told the Independent “Seventy-five per cent of people who go into Sednaya do not come out alive. It is a field court, where most ‘judges’ are from the secret police.” Furthermore, in the prison, prisoners have not been given even elementary health care and are dying from infected cuts.
According to detainee of Sednaya prison, Kamal Muhee al-Deen al-Jum’a, there are three wings in the prison, one for political prisoners, red for terrorists and white for civilians, “whoever faces terrorism charges is put in the red prison. The red prison is known to be the prison of death and daily killings. Very few survive in the red wing.”
According to Amnesty International, “since 2011, thousands of people have died in custody in Syria’s brutal detention centers. Tens of thousands more have experienced shocking torture”. Many of them have been brutally beaten, raped, given electric shocks and more, often to take out forced “confessions”.
Amnesty International Interviewed 65 former detainees of Saydnaya Military Prison for a report, It Breaks the Human’: Torture, Disease and Death in Syria’s prisons, during the testimony, most of them said that they had witnessed detainees dying in custody and some described being detained in cells along with dead bodies.
