For a life-saving surgery: Eman Ahmed (Egypt) flies to India

Eman Ahmed Adb El Aty(Egypt) is now preparing to fly to India to receive weight reduction surgery. Weighing around 500 kg, Eman, 36, will be flown to Mumbai from Egypt on a chartered plane where bariatric surgeon Dr. Muffazal Lakdawala will perform surgery free of charge.

Earlier, her visa request was denied, but Dr. Lakdawala  personally appealed to India’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Twitter. Ms. Swaraj responded affirmatively, “We will definitely help her.”

“She is battling with her life every single day,” said Lakdawala. “Right now she is like a living bombshell, which could blow up on her any moment,” he added. According to her family, Abd El Aty suffered from a thyroid problem since childhood, at 11-years-old, she started gaining weight. Dr. Lakadwala has started raising funds for her treatment. He has also ensured cultural differences are respected and a female team is kept for her care.

The visas are received by the family, as the process was expedited on humanitarian grounds. Eman never lost hope, now she feels things may change at a faster pace.
