Indefinite general strike disrupts normal life at Thoubal, Kakching

Imphal: Indefinite general strike called by Thoubal District MP Candidature Demand Committee in Thoubal and Kakching Districts, which was started from on Thursday disrupted normal life in both the districts.

The state’s Rajya Sabha MP seat has been lying vacant due to the sudden death of former MP Haji Abdul Salam and by-election is scheduled to be held on May 25.

The late MP hailed from Wabagai Assembly segment which is one of the eight Assembly segments of the Outer Parliamentary Constituency, most of whose electorates are not provisioned to contest in the Parliamentary elections as it has been reserved for Scheduled Tribes.

The total number of electorate population is around 2.25 lakh from the eight assembly segments, playing a decisive role in determining the fate of the candidates.

The general strike called by the Thoubal District MP Candidature Demand Committee has severely affected transportation and business establishments in both the districts.
