Chinese deaths in Pakistan represents threat to Chinese interests

The recent deaths of Chinese citizens in Pakistan has brought Chinese attention on the unstable situation in Pakistan. The deaths, combined with the Pakistan’s poor anti-terrorist response is making the Chinese concerned with regard to their projects being developed in Pakistan.

An editorial published in the Chinese daily, Global Times, has stated that Pakistan is known for being a “hotbed for international terrorism,” which could pose a severe threat to Chinese interests in the region. The article further goes into the need for China to balance security and its global ambitions in light of the threats posed to Chinese interests.

The editorial also states that terror organizations may actively target Chinese nationals as China’s global prestige grows,. In this scenario, the Chinese government may need to take a more involved approach to its diplomacy to ensure the security of its people in high risk areas is guaranteed.
