One of the main issues that will be addressed during the meeting on June 26 between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump will be the Trump administration’s stricter enforcement and review of the H-1B immigration visa.
The visa is extensively used by Indian IT consultancy service firms such as Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services to offer its services to larger tech companies based in the US. The H-1B visa also forms the bedrock on which skilled workers from India emigrate to the US.
The meeting is also expected to focus on convincing the Trump administration of building deeper economic relations with India as the US mulls adopting isolationist trade policies. PM Modi will be looking to show Trump that India’s exports to the US are complementary to Trump’s domestic employment policies.
The Prime Minister will also look to build upon the deeper interactions established during PM Modi’s visit to the US during Barack Obama’s presidency.
