‘Night watchman’ Rabada scores more than 5 Indian ‘batsmen’, SA 81/3 at lunch

Date:

Hashim Amla and Kagiso Rabada added 66 runs for the 4th wicket as India could manage just one wicket, of Dean Elgar, in the first session of the second day of third Test against South Africa in Johannesburg.

Resuming their batting from the overnight score of 6/1, Amla and Rabada struggled early on, getting beaten more often than not but they survived and didn’t throw their wickets. With time the confidence increased and both started playing shots.

Amla, who could not do much in the last 2 Tests, changed his approach and was seen shuffling towards the off stump to avoid any lbw chances and he succeeded in that.

Meanwhile Kagiso Rabda, who has been used as night watchman on so many occasions that he has probably started growing in confidence, kept defending the ball. He took his time before playing shots. By the time he was dismissed, in the penultimate over before lunch, he had scored more than what Murali Vijay, KL Rahul, Ajinkya Rahane, Parthiv Patel and Hardik Pandya had added together and that earned him a standing ovation from the fans.

AB de Villiers was the next man on the crease and he could not open his scoring before the umpires decided to break for lunch. Amla was unbeaten on 32 while South Africa had raced to 81/3, trailing by just 106 runs.
