TN governor apologises to woman journalist, after protests gather momentum

Date:

Tamil Nadu governor Banwarilal Purohit issued an apology for patting a senior lady journalist, at the Raj Bhawan on April 17, on the cheek without taking her consent. The journalist’s tweet about the incident went viral and got support from social media.

Senior journalist, Lakshmi Subramanian, a reporter for a well-known weekly magazine, had tweeted that she had asked Governor Purohit a question at a press conference. Instead of replying, he patted her on the cheek without her consent. Journalists in the state demanded an unconditioned apology from Purohit, which gathered momentum with DMK joining protests.

Subramanian raised the question of consent, saying that for her it was an inappropriate gesture.
