School in Virginia opts to be renamed after Obama

Date:

JEB Stuart Elementary School in Richmond, Virginia, named after the Confederate General who fought for the rights of slave owners in the Civil War, is set to be renamed after Barak Obama.

JEB Stuart’s name was voted out, replacing it with the name of first African-American President. The name suggestions came from the community and students — 95 percent of whom are African-American.

“I couldn’t think of a more fitting change in the arc of history to have a school named after our first African-American President,” said Jason, the school’s superintendent.

Many believe that the school should have been re-branded years ago.

There was only one member from the school board who voted against the renaming, Kenya Gibson. But, she supported the result.

“I am really thankful that we finally rejected the celebratory symbols of our racist history. In Richmond we have had lots of discussions about our monuments, and the school name is certainly a part of our legacy. It is time to move on from that,” she said.

Also, Davis International Baccalaureate Elementary School, which was named after the president of the Confederate States of America was changed and named after Barack Obama.
