From the formation of new planets to the existence of humans everything on this earth is a mystery. So is the haunted island of Dolls, situated in Xochimilco, Mexico, Isla De Las Muclecas (Island of Dolls), is the creepiest tourist destination. The haunted island is covered with toys, mostly dolls. Mexico has dedicated this island to a little girl who passed away almost 50 years ago at a very tender age.
It is actually a floating garden all covered by dolls’ limbs, heads and eyes hanging from trees branches and fences. The dolls hang there all day long but are particularly scary at night. The story behind the doll is told by the locals living near to the small island. It is said that the corpse of the little girl was found drowned in mysterious circumstances.
Many witnesses have testified that they have heard the dolls whisper among themselves. Many others have claimed that the haunted dolls have tried to lure them to visit the island.
One cannot tell who is saying the truth and who isn’t. Every person who lives nearby or has been there has a different story to tell.
Don Julian Santana Barrera, was the caretaker of the island. The story is that Julian found the corpse of the little girl, but could not save her life. A few days later he found a doll hanging from one of the branches, which was thought to be of the girl. To pay condolence to the little girl’s soul, Julian hung the doll on a tree’s branch.
Reports conclude that the caretaker has made the story up to attract tourists.
Julian later came out to tell the story of the spirit of the girl which has been haunting him. He, in order to please the spirit, had been hanging dolls on the branches and fences.
In 2001, Julian was found dead at the very same spot where the girl was found. Ever since the island of dolls has become a very famous tourist destination. Visitors come here to hang dolls and pay respect. The place has been featured on many TV shows and articles.
