Newest phase in Earth’s history named after Meghalaya rock

Date:

It has been confirmed that we live in the Meghalayan Age. A group of scientists have innovated a new phase and called it Meghalayan according to the earth’s geological history. A stalagmite from a Meghalayan cave helped determine the climatic events about 4200 years ago and this thereby marked the beginning of the new phase the is prevalent till date.

The beginning of the Meghalayan Age goes back to a gigantic global drought that ruined the old agricultural civilisations from Egypt to China. This age is a part of a longer period which is called the Holocene Epoch that indicates all the occurrences of the past.

Reasons for the uniqueness of the Meghalayan Age

  • This is the first interval in the geological history of the Earth that merged with a massive cultural event.
  • The evidence of the climate event has been discovered in the sediments across the seven continents including Meghalaya.
  • The droughts that spanned over 200 years gave way to human migrations in Middle-Eastern countries like Egypt, Greece, Syria, Palestine, Mesopotamia, Indus Valley, and Yangtze river valley.
  • The global climate change was triggered by shifts in atmospheric and oceanic circulation.
