NHRC issues notices to govt over Mandawali starvation deaths

Date:

The National Human Rights Commission of India(NHRC) has issued notices to the central and Delhi government over death of three minor sisters due to starvation in Mandawali area of East Delhi, a two days they were found dead.

While the state government is calling it a systemic failure, the postmortem reports confirms that the reason behind the trio’s death is starvation as their stomachs were absolutely empty. The girls were aged two, four and eight.

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said the deaths due to “poverty and illness” was the “biggest failure of the system”. Sisodia said he has asked the Directorate of Integrated Child Development Services to submit details of the officials responsible for keeping records of the people living in the area, and fix accountability.

Talking to ANI, Amita Saxena, MS, Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital, said, “There was no trace of fat on their bodies. Postmortem showed the stomach was absolutely empty. It’s a case of gross malnutrition”

“The Delhi government has ordered a magisterial probe into the matter,” Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said.

According to reports the police were initially treating it as the case of natural deaths, but the recovery of pills and medicine bottles prompted them to look into the poisoning angle.
The girls were brought to the hospital by a member of the family but were declared dead on arrival.

Pankaj Singh deputy commissioner of police (east) had earlier said, “A board of doctors conducted a re-examination at the GTB hospital. According to the initial autopsy report, the girls died due to starvation and its complications.”
