JNU hosts second convocation after 46 years

Date:

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is hosting its second convocation after 46 years to award PhD degrees at the AICTE auditorium today.

Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University, Professor VK Saraswat will deliver the convocation address and award the degrees.

“All research scholars, who have completed the requirements for the PhD degree, between 01.01.2017 and 30.06.2018 are eligible for the conferment of PhD degree at the Convocation,” reads the JNU website.

The university conducted its first and only convocation in 1972. However, it triggered a controversy when the then students’ union president V.C. Koshy gave a radical speech.

At the first convocation, Indian film and stage actor, Balraj Sahni delivered the address, where he had famously said, “It is my earnest hope and prayer that you, graduates of Jawaharlal Nehru University may succeed where I and so many others of my generation have failed.”

According to the reports, JNU Students’ Union has appealed to the JNU community to boycott the convocation, accusing Vice Chancellor Jagadesh Kumar of “muzzling their democratic rights”.
