Residents & experts unhappy over Dharavi slum revamp

Date:

The State Government of made an announcement on Tuesday to revamp the Dharavi Redevelopment Project after a number of delays. The residents of the area as well as real estate experts are however, unhappy about the plan and are doubtful about the successful functioning of the project.

The permission was given to refurbish the complete stretch of 535 acres of Dharavi by the state cabinet to set up a special purpose vehicle and a global bill for the complete project. The initial plan was to divide the area into five zones from BKC to Sion to be able to carry out the work smoothly.

According to the real estate experts, the construction sector is seeing a dip due to which it might be difficult to complete the plan. The original plan was to allot free houses to around 59,000 families living in Dharavi slum since before 2000 and subsidised homes would be provided to residents staying in the slum from 2000 to 2011.

The residents and other experts are questioning this decision as there are more than 2 lakh houses in the Dharavi slum area, and by doing this, only certain pockets would be taken care of.

The people living in the Matunga Labour Camp that includes chawls and buildings want to be exempted from this project since they want more area in square feet as compared to what is being offered to them currently.
