ISRO launches its fifth satellite this year

The Indian Space Organisation (ISRO), on Wednesday, launched GSLV-MK-III D2 carrying GSAT-29, its latest communication satellite from Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.

This was ISRO’s fifth launch this year. The satellite launch is the second test flight for the GSLV Mark III rocket and this is ISRO’s heaviest rocket.

GSAT-29, a communication satellite weighing around 2423 kgs, is designed for a mission life of 10 years.

The satellite carries Ka/Ku-band high throughout communication transponders with the goal to meet the communication requirements of users, especially in remote areas.

The satellite will provide communication services to the Northeast region and Jammu and Kashmir to facilitate execution of Digital India initiatives, ISRO Chairman Dr K Sivan said.

India is currently dependent on European launchers to put heavy satellites in space. The GSAT MK III is also the rocket designated for ISRO’s second moon mission Chandrayaan 2 scheduled for next year.
