Cyclone Gaja leaves Tamil Nadu houses damaged and trees uprooted

The Nagapattinam district in Tamil Nadu was struck by a severe cyclone this morning, as predicted by the National Disaster Management Authority leaving trees uprooted and houses damaged. The overnight rainfall and severe winds caused this havoc due to the cyclone Gaja.

The storm crossed the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coast falling between Nagapattinam and Vedaranniyam yesterday evening leaving chaos in the Thanjavur and Tiruvarur districts. Two people have been reported dead and one person injured in the cyclone according to ANI.

Previously, warnings had been issued in parts of Tamil Nadu to keep preventive measures ready in order to save the city from the damage. The government authorities were also alerted to keep their resources ready in the case of the disaster.

A number of measures were taken by the government to help during the calamity such as appointing the National Disaster Response Force and Tamil Nadu Disaster Response Force, moving around 20,000 inhabitants along the coastline to the relief camps. They Indian Navy was also informed for immediate efforts, if required.

Andhra Pradesh was also affected by the disaster and is expected to result in heavy downpour and strong winds in several parts of the region.
