Karnataka: 11 dead, 72 hospitalised after consuming prasad

At least 11 people died and 72 were hospitalised after consuming prasad at a temple in Chamarajanagar district of Karnataka, news agency ANI reported. Twelve people are in critical condition, the police said.

The Karnataka government has announced an ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased while medical treatment of others will be taken care of by the state government.

Chief minister HD Kumaraswamy visited the K.R. Hospital, Mysuru, where the injured from the Chamarajanagar food poisoning incident is being treated.

The deceased have been identified as Gopiyamma (55), Pappanna (50), Shantha (20), Anitha 14 and Anil (12), PTI reported.

According to police, the foundation laying ceremony of Maramma temple was organised on Thursday morning and Prasad was distributed after the function.

Many people started vomiting and complained of stomach pain, they were immediately rushed to the hospital nearby.
