Delhi HC grants National Herald publishers 2 weeks to vacate the office

Date:

In a major setback for the Gandhi family, the Delhi high court on Friday ordered Associated Journals Limited (AJL), publishers of National Herald newspaper, to vacate the Herald House.

According to the court orders, AJL has two weeks to vacate its registered office at Herald House, 5-A, Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, New Delhi. After the given time period,  proceedings under the Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorized Occupants) Act, 1971 would be initiated, Justice Sunil Gaur said.

The court passed the order on AJL’s plea challenging the Centre’s October 30 order ending its 56-year-old lease.

During the hearing, the Centre and Land and Development Office (L&DO) has said that no press has been functioning in the premises since 2008 and it was being used only for commercial purposes in violation of the lease deed.
