FAKE Alert: The government is not printing currency notes featuring Atal Bihari Vajpayee

An article is making rounds on social media according to which the government is going to print currency notes featuring former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

The headline of the article by apnikhabare.com Read: मोदी सरकार का ऐतिहासिक फैसला, भारतीय मुद्रा पर होगी पूर्व प्रधानमंत्री अटलजी की तस्वीर

(Translate: The Modi government’s historic decision will be on the Indian currency, the picture of former prime minister Atalji)

The article was featured a Rs 200 note with the photograph of the former Prime Minister. The article was shared on various Facebook pages which went viral.

Interestingly, while the featured image of the article is Rs 200 note with Vajpayee’s picture, but the article has no mention of the same. The article further claims that the “Modi government will launch new Rs 100 coin that will feature former PM and Bharat Ratna awardee Atal ji’s photo.” However, the image attached in the report is of a Rs 1,000 coin.

FACT CHECK

When NewsMobile Fact Checked the clam, we found out that the claims made by the website is FAKEas the government has not made any announcement regarding issuing currency notes with Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

A month ago PM Modi had only released a commemorative Rs 100 coin in the memory of the former Prime Minister.

The coin was released on December 24, 2018, marking Vajpayee’s birthday where several BJP leaders were present, including BJP chief Amit Shah, Arun Jaitley, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan and Lal Krishna Advani.
