Gurugram residents march to save Aravali forests

Over 200 residents of Gurugram took out a protest march on Sunday to push for safeguarding the Aravali range.

Aravali biodiversity is a vital ecological zone and biodiversity hotspot that’s home to nearly 400 species of plants and 200 species of native and migratory birds.

The Haryana government has decided to amend the PLPA in a move that will destroy the entire stretch of Aravali hills in Gurgaon and Faridabad district – 26000 plus acres along with the catchments of the Badhkal, Surajkund and Damadama lakes, and other forest areas in South Haryana. Aravalis act as green lungs and water recharge zone for NCR and are shield against desertification and impacts of climate change. The Supreme Court of India has ruled that the Aravallis have to be protected at any cost.

The fight was towards preventing the amendment of the Punjab land preservation act drafted in the year 1900 that puts 29682 acres of Aravalis forest area of being destroyed. People of all ages, from teenagers to senior citizens, gathered at Khushbu Chowk with placards and banners.
