Elections 2019: Hardik Patel, Gujarat’s Patidar leader, joins Congress

Patidar leader Hardik Patel joined the Congress today in the presence of Rahul Gandhi during the party’s Working Committee meet in Ahmedabad.

After joining the Congress, Patel lauded Rahul Gandhi for his leadership defended the party over the BJP’s charge of dynastic politics saying that “how it was nepotism if the family has risked the lives of their loved ones for the country.” According to reports, he’ll contest the general elections from Jamnagar constituency against Poonamben Madam of the BJP.

Hardik Patel made headlines in 2015 spearheading the Patidar reservation agitation. During the 2017 Gujarat Assembly polls, when Congress secured 77 seats out of the 182 seats, Patel had openly backed the party.

He had backed the Congress in the 2017 Gujarat assembly elections in which the party gave a stiff competition to the BJP, winning 81 out of 182 assembly seats.
