Study: The concept of ‘Sugar Rush’ may be a myth

Date:

The concept of ‘Sugar rush’ is a stage of hyperactivity which results after the intake of sweets in high quantity to increase alertness and energy may actually be a myth according to a study.

Some scientists found that sugar works the other way around making people less active and more tired. Researchers from the University of Warwick and Lancaster University in the UK are examining how sugar works in impacting people’s moods.

The data was collected from 31 published studies which involved around 1,300 adults. The team investigated the effect of consuming sugar and analyzed the moods including anger, alertness, depression, and fatigue. The analysis was based on factors such as the quantity and even the kind of sugar that was consumed vis-a-vis a demanding routine that included strenuous physical or mental activities.

The researchers found that people who consumed more sugar than others ended with lesser energy and alertness levels. The study shows that the idea of a ‘sugar rush’ is a myth without any truth behind it.

“The idea that sugar can improve mood has been widely influential in popular culture, so much so that people all over the world consume sugary drinks to become more alert or combat fatigue,” said Konstantinos Mantantzis, from the Humboldt University of Berlin, who led the study.

The findings substantiated that there was no correlation with feeling a rush of energy and consuming sugar in large amounts. It ends up making you more lethargic.
