This viral message about the fake and real Rs 500 currency note is NOT true

Date:

A picture of two Rs 500 currency notes is going viral on social media. It is claimed that one is genuine and the other counterfeit.

“500 रूपए की वो नोट मत लीजिये, जिनमें हरी पट्टी गांधीजी के नजदीक बानी है, क्योंकि ये नकली हिअ. 500 की सिर्फ वही नोटें लीजिये, जिसमे हरी पट्टी RBI गवर्नर की सिग्नेचर के पास है. इस मैसेज को अपने परिवार और दोस्तों तक पहुचाएं” – the message read.

( Translation – Don’t take the Rs 500 currency note that has the green line close to Gandhiji, it’s fake. Rs 500 note that has the green line close to the signature of the governor is real. spread this message amongst your friends and family. )

At the time of filing the report, the post had almost 47,000 shares.

FACT CHECK

When we fact-checked the post, we found out that it is fake.

We started by checking the official website of Reserve Bank of India.  On their website, we found the guidelines for verifications of a Rs 500 currency notes.

In the viral picture, the green line that is mention is known as the ‘security thread”. The 5th point of the guideline states that the “windowed security thread changes colour from green to blue when the note is tilted”

However, the guideline doesn’t talk about the placement of the thread.

This proves that the viral message is fake and this method should not be used to differentiate between a fake and real Rs 500 currency note.
