Some early morning voters in Gurgaon were in for a rude shock when they reached their polling booth. They found their polling booth had been shifted but had received no prior information about this from the Election Commission. When citizens reached booth number 281 at Patio Club, Nirvana Country in Gurgaon to vote they were directed to the booth at Pressco Apartment. The slip given to voters had a different polling station listed. Some voters had to spend 2 hours in the line where there were total confusion and mismanagement. Senior citizens faced the brunt of this unannounced change.
The Election Commission of India has been using high tech methods to keep the electorate informed and help answer their queries and grievances. Not only does the Election Commission have a website for citizens to check their names in the voters’ list, the Election commission has also started an android voters helpline app to lodge their grievances and find out information.
Voters can also check the status in the voter list by calling or sending sms to 1950. But it seems voters were not informed of the change of their polling station by the Election Commission.
Over 22 lakh voters will decide the fate of 24 candidates as Gurgaon today with 1,194 polling stations spread across nine Assembly segments in three districts — Gurgaon (4), Rewari (2) and Nuh (3).
The contest in Gurgaon is mainly between sitting BJP MP Rao Inderjit Singh and Captain Ajay Singh Yadav of the Congress. Also in the fray are Mehmood Khan of the Jannayak Janata Party-Aam Aadmi Party alliance and Virender Rana of the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD).
