Ajoy Kumar, Sunil Jakhar resign; take responsibility for Congress’ dismal performance in their states

Date:

The Congress party was anyway struggling with resignations and the latest has come in from Punjab. The state Congress Chief Sunil Jakhar offered to resign from his post after he lost elections in Gurdaspur against BJP’s actor turned politician Sunny Deol.

Apart from him, owing to the dismal performance of Congress in the state of Jharkhand, where it won just one seat, Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee President Ajoy Kumar offered to resign from his post. However, reports suggest that his resignation has not been accepted as yet and a party stand on it is still to be decided.

Ajoy Kumar took ‘moral responsibility’ for the poor performance of Congress in the Lok Sabha elections. BJP led NDA had a sweeping win and mustered numbers higher than 2014 too.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) Party alliance won 12 of the 14 Lok Sabha seats while the Congress and the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) bagged one each. Even Congress old hands like Subodh Kant Shai from Ranchi lost to the BJP wave.

Post the results, Congress has seen a slew of resignations come its way. Congress president Rahul Gandhi tendered his resignation earlier in the week, which the CWC rejected. Apart from him, Maharashtra Congress chief Ashok Chavan also resigned from his position. Even Raj Babbar, the UP chief, resigned post the miserable performance of Congress in the state. Out of 80 seats in UP, the party could only win Sonia Gandhi’s Rae Bareli, with Rahul Gandhi losing to BJP’s Smriti Irani.

Yogendra Mishra, president of district Congress Committee- Amethi, has also resigned. Niranjan Patnaik, president, Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee also communicated his resignation to the AICC President.

Karnataka Congress campaign committee president HK Patil also put in his papers and has written to party president Rahul Gandhi, asking for introspection.
