After a week long Doctor’s protest in Kolkata, a brawl broke out between the kin of a patient and hospital staff at the Maharshi Valmiki Hospital , Delhi on Tuesday, June 18, 2019.
The relatives of a minor rape victim attacked guards of the Maharshi Valmiki hospital and threw chairs in agitation, after the doctors referred the six-year-old victim to another hospital for a medical test.
Dr Sameer Kakkar, who is a member of the Resident Doctors’ Association (RSA) at the hospital said; “The girl was brought to the hospital around 6pm after which she underwent general examination for rape. However, protocol dictates that a deeper examination be conducted to check for internal injuries and bleeding. For a child, it can be very painful and hence needs to be done under general anaesthesia. Maharshi Valmiki, however, is a small hospital and we do not have the facility for general anaesthesia after 4pm, so the patient was referred to a higher centre.”

On Monday, June 10, 2019 , a junior doctor at the NRS Medical College, Kolkata was seriously injured by the family members of a deceased patient who allegedly passed away due to medical negligence.The entire nation stood in solidarity with the three doctors who were injured, calling for a nation-wide doctors protest.
The incident occurred a few days after the doctors called off the nation-wide strike following West Bengal CM assurance that adequate measures will be provided to ensure the security and safety of the doctors on duty in the state.
