This monsoon, take care of your palate; try seasonal alternatives

Date:

Most of India has already welcomed monsoon. North India has just begun the monsoon season. A respite from the harsh summers. But a change of weather also means a change in the way we dress up, eat and go about our lives. Every season has its own problems and issues to handle.

So, what are some ways to avoid the change of season affecting our physical systems? What are certain things that are best avoided during the rains. Are there some food items that we should consume more than others?

Here is a complete list –

Avoid oily foods – as much as we all like to have a hot sizzling plate of pakoras on a nice rainy day, oily food isn’t very good for our digestion system in the season change. Try baked and sautéed food items instead. It will keep the tummy light and will help you avoid bloating.

Soups: Nothing like soups and curries prepared at home. Packaged soups and foods have chemicals and preservatives. Avoid during monsoons. Stick to healthy, seasonal vegetable broths. Make it tasty by garnishing with seasonings.
Nothing like a hot cuppa soup on a rainy day!

Seasonal fruits: Always eat fruits that are pertinent to a particular season. Nature has created them to suit the season. Monsoons will see a surge of cherries, plums, lychees, jamun and pomegranate. Mango season is almost on its way out. Not only does it strengthen your immune system, but also gives the nutrients your body needs.

Hydrate: As the weather turns humid, dehydration might occur, therefore drink plenty of water.

Herbal alternatives: Herbal and ayurvedic alternatives especially for teas, is very good for the body. Each herb has a certain ingredient that helps handle different issues. They act as antioxidants. For example, herbal teas like green tea, chamomile tea, peppermint tea and ginger tea contain antioxidants which boosts immunity.

Avoid salad leaves and green leafy vegetables: During rains there are high chances of contamination due to bacteria that leads to infections. Be sure about the vegetables you get. Always wash them in hot water before you cook.

Enjoy the monsoon onslaught but in a healthy way.
