What does it mean for Jammu and Kashmir after removal of Article 370?

New Delhi: Article 370 which grants special status to Jammu and Kashmir has been removed, Home Minister Amit Shah said in parliament on Monday.

He said that the President Ram Nath Kovind had signed an order that would come into force “at once”. The announcement came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting of his cabinet at his house this morning.

J&K has been bifurcated into two Union Territories with two Lieutenant Governors. Ladakh will be a Union Territory without a legislature and Jammu and Kashmir will have a legislature.

What does it mean for Jammu and Kashmir after removal of Article 370?

Before

  • Article 370 gave Jammu and Kashmir its own constitution.

 

  • Article 370 exempted Jammu & Kashmir from the Indian Constitution (except Article 1 and Article 370 itself).

 

  • It restricted Parliament’s legislative powers, limiting it to matters of Defence, External Affairs and Communications.

 

  • Article 370 made it necessary for the centre to get the state legislature’s approval for introducing any policies or constitutional powers to the state.

After removal of Article

  • Jammu and Kashmir will no longer be a state.

 

  • The scrapping of Article 370 ends special status for J&K.

  • Ladakh will be a Union Territory without a legislature and Jammu and Kashmir will have a legislature.
