Shashi Tharoor tweets photo of Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi in Soviet Russia as image from the US

Date:

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor is trending on Twitter for what can be called a ‘tweet blunder’.

Tharoor tweeted a picture with a caption that read: ‘Nehru & India Gandhi in the US in 1954. Look at the hugely enthusiastic spontaneous turnout of the American public, without any special PR campaign, NRI crowd management or hyped-up media publicity.’

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above picture and found the claim attached to it to be FAKE.

On further processing, we ran a Reverse Image Search and found;

  1. The picture is not from US, it’s from Moscow (then USSR, now Russia).
  2. The picture is not of 1954, it’s of 1956.
  3. The Congress leader also mistyped Indira Gandhi’s name as ‘India Gandhi’ in his tweet.

Later, Tharoor clarified in his tweet, ”I am told this picture (forwarded to me) probably is from a visit to the USSR and not the US. Even if so, it still doesn’t alter the message: the fact is that former PMs also enjoyed popularity abroad. When @narendramodi is honoured, @PMOIndia is honoured; respect is for India.”

This proves that the claim in the viral post is FAKE.
