Today in Parliament, the Special Protection Group (Amendment) Bill, 2019 was passed in Rajya Sabha amid the Opposition led by Congress staging a walkout.

Speaking on the SPG Amendment Bill in Rajya Sabha, Home Minister Amit Shah said SPG security is meant for the head of the state only.

  • Home Minister Amit Shah said the Bill was not brought keeping in mind the Gandhi family and that even current Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s security under SPG would be removed if he does not return to power after five years.

  • The BJP MPs asked for an apology from Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury over his description of Prime Minister Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah as “infiltrators” and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman as “Nirbala”.

  • RJD leader Manoj Kumar Jha, objecting Special Protection Group (Amendment) Bill, 2019 said in Rajya Sabha, “In 1984, we lost Indira Gandhi. The other day there was some breach in the house of Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi. Some people in the media said they were from the same party. But a breach is a breach. After all, Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her own bodyguard.”

  • The government’s ‘One Nation One Ration Card’ initiative that will largely cover migrant labourers and daily wagers will come into force across the country from June 1, 2020, Union minister Ram Vilas Paswan said on Tuesday.

 

  • Parliament passed Bill to merge two Union Territories — Daman & Diu, Dadra & Nagar Haveli.
